The floor
A floor for people, not pallets.
An office mezzanine creates workplace inside the building you already have: desks, offices, meeting rooms, training space or staff facilities over the operation. Because people work there, occupancy, escape, fire, acoustics, light, air and services are settled before the steel is fixed. Office mezzanine floors, common questions
What is an office mezzanine floor?
An intermediate steel floor inside a commercial or industrial building, built for people: the floor, stairs and fire measures, with partitions, lighting, power, ventilation and finished interiors as one scheme.
Does an office mezzanine need Building Regulations approval and fire protection?
Normally yes to both. Structure, fire performance, escape, stairs, guarding, accessibility and ventilation are assessed for the project, and storage-only concessions do not carry over to office use.
Do I need planning permission for an office mezzanine?
Not always. A wholly internal mezzanine in England often needs none, but external works, a change of use, planning conditions or listed status can change that, and rules differ across the UK.
Will an office mezzanine need a lift?
Accessible access is settled at the outset. In England, guidance generally expects lift access to a new mezzanine unless a justified alternative is accepted, and the route is agreed for the project.
